But for this “chattel,” the germ of secession
Had ne'er taken root in a southern possession;
He's been frequently likened to “just so much cash,”
But he's more like the eye placed just under the lash;
He's a queer, jolly soul, this same “nig” of the South,
With his billiard ball heel and his huge lip and mouth,
And although he's indulged in both breakdown and jig,
The music of “cat” doth oft break down the nig.
