Squibs is a rocket in his way at a “Ward Primary,” and
of a stripe, too, with the incoming dynasty. He had no
sooner heard the “returns,” than packing up his extra shirt
and collar, he started for Springfield to see Old Abe. Imag-
ine his delight on beholding that great man (six feet four in
his stockings), not above the old occupation by which he
had made his way in the world, actually ax in hand, splitting
rails by the thousand. “What a sight!” exclaimed
Squibs, “O that the world could see him thus, in this
his unaffected Democracy!”
